WeChat

More than a chat app, WeChat bundles messaging, social sharing and, in some regions, mobile payments into one service. Published under the WeChat name, it claims well over a billion users worldwide and treats itself as a lifestyle platform rather than just a messenger.

Conversations can include text, photos, voice notes, video and shared locations, and group chats hold up to 500 members. Voice and video calls reach anywhere, with group video calls for up to 9 people. Moments is a personal feed for posting photos and videos to friends, and a Status feature shares a passing mood that fades. Stickers come in thousands of animated designs, and users can make custom ones, including selfie stickers. Real-time location sharing helps meet up. In certain regions, Pay and Wallet provide mobile payments and WeChat Out makes low-cost calls to phones and landlines. The app is localised in 18 languages and can translate messages and Moments posts.

It has 100,000,000+ installs on this store, but the rating is a modest 3.3 from about 5.9 million reviews, with 48% five stars and 36% one star. There are no ads; in-app purchases run from €0.65 to €16.99 when billed through Google Play. It was updated on 2026-08-14, the Android requirement varies with device, and it is rated USK: Ages 12+. We list 30 versions; version 8.0.72 is a very large 299.5 MB.

Anyone keeping in touch with contacts who rely on WeChat will need it. Newcomers should note the polarised rating and the big download.
