Messages, voice notes, photos, videos, GIFs and files travel over the phone's data connection, avoiding SMS and MMS charges. Voice and video calls are encrypted, and group calls can include up to 50 people. Group chats can hold up to 1,000 members, with admin settings to control who can post and to manage membership. Stories made of images, text or video disappear after 24 hours, and privacy settings decide exactly who sees each one. The developer says its open-source Signal Protocol prevents even Signal from reading messages or hearing calls, and that it collects no data about users or their contacts.
