Free, ad-funded television on a phone is the promise of PlutoTV: Stream Free Movies/TV, the streaming app from Pluto, Inc. It combines two ways of watching: an on-demand library of films and series, and a lineup of live channels that behave much like traditional TV, all without a subscription.

Viewers can pick a movie or episode and watch it whenever they like, or switch over to the live side, which offers hundreds of channels covering news, sports, crime, comedy, anime and other themes, with new channels added over time. The catalogue is organised into categories such as action, true crime, sci-fi, reality, romance and family viewing, and the listing names partner networks including Paramount, CBS, MTV, Nickelodeon and NBC. A few tools help with finding things again: live channels can be saved to a Favorites list, titles can go on a Watchlist, and curated hubs suggest what to watch next. Registering a free account lets playback resume across devices.

The ratings are mixed. The app averages 3.7 from over 800,000 ratings, and while 50% are five stars, a sizable 20% are one star. It has passed 100,000,000+ installs.
