Group chats for families, roommates, sports teams, bands and faith groups are the focus of GroupMe, a messaging app from GroupMe. Its main trick is that people can be added with just a phone number or email address, even if they have never installed the app.

Starting a chat means adding members by phone number or email, and anyone new to GroupMe can join the conversation by SMS straight away. Notification controls let users decide what alerts they get, mute individual chats or the whole app, and leave or end group conversations. Messages can include the app's own emoji set, memes and GIFs from a built-in search, and links display a preview right in the chat. A gallery collects every photo and video shared in a group so they can be browsed later. Direct messages bring the same features to one-on-one chats, and the service is also available from a computer through the GroupMe website.

GroupMe has 10,000,000+ installs and a 4.6 average from 612,642 ratings, with 77% five stars and only 4% one star. The record lists no ads and no in-app purchases.
