Duolingo: Learn Languages

Short daily lessons that feel closer to a game than homework are the formula behind Duolingo: Language Lessons. The app from Duolingo teaches more than 40 languages, including Spanish, French, Chinese, Italian, German and English, and it has grown to cover math, music and chess as well.

Language lessons are broken into small chunks that practise speaking, reading, listening and writing, gradually building vocabulary and grammar with the aim of preparing learners for real conversations. The developer says the courses are designed by learning experts. The newer subjects follow the same bite-sized approach. The chess course walks through the basics, strategy and puzzles and lets learners play online matches. The math course works on everyday skills such as working out a tip, spotting patterns and practising multiplication, fractions and geometry, and a music course is offered too.

The scale is vast: 500,000,000+ installs and a 4.7 average from roughly 49 million ratings, with 83% five stars and only 2% one star. The app is free, with ads, and in-app purchases range from $0.99 to $239.99 per item, which covers paid plans. It was updated on 2026-09-21, is rated Everyone, and its Android requirement varies with device. We list 54 versions; the latest, 6.95.4, is 171.5 MB.

Beginners, casual learners and anyone who wants a daily habit rather than a textbook will find it a friendly starting point. Learners who dislike ads in the free tier, or who want intensive grammar study, may need something more. Frequent updates, with 54 versions listed, show that the app is steadily maintained.
