Nintendo's plumber adapted to a phone held in one hand: that is the idea behind Super Mario Run from Nintendo Co., Ltd. Mario runs forward on his own, and the player's only job is to tap at the right moments, making it a platformer designed for quick sessions on the move.

Timing taps produces jumps, midair spins and wall jumps that help collect coins and reach the goal. There are four modes. World Tour is the main adventure: 24 courses through plains, caverns, ghost houses, airships and castles to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser, with three types of coloured coins to find and scores to compare with friends; beating it opens a nine-course bonus world, World Star. Remix 10 strings together ten very short courses that change on each attempt, with Daisy hidden among them. Toad Rally is a competitive mode against other players' stylish runs, and winning brings Toads to your kingdom. Kingdom Builder uses gathered coins and Toads to grow that kingdom.

The game has 100,000,000+ installs and about 1.7 million ratings averaging 3.9. Opinion is split: 59% are five stars and 18% are one star. The pricing model explains some of that: the download costs nothing and all four modes can be tried, including World Tour courses 1-1 to 1-4, but unlocking the full game is a one-time purchase listed at $9.99, after which there is no further payment and no ads.
